Antilles, group of islands located in the Caribbean Sea and comprising all of the West Indies except The Bahamas. They are divided into two major groups: the Greater Antilles, including Cuba, Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), Jamaica, and Puerto Rico; and the Lesser Antilles, comprising all the rest of the islands.

Guadeloupe is one of four territories presently under French sovereignty in the Caribbean – the two overseas departments of Guadeloupe and Martinique, plus the two overseas collectivities of St. Martin and St. Barthélemy (St. Bart's). The territories are known as the French West Indies or Antilles Français.

If you have African Caribbean roots, the Caribbean Research Forum at AfriGeneas is packed with information. If your ancestor died in Aruba (right) or other islands of the Netherlands Antilles, he maybe listed in microfilmed civil registration records.

The term French West Indies or French Antilles (French: Antilles françaises) refers to the eight territories currently under French sovereignty in the Antilles islands of the Caribbean: The two overseas departments of: Guadeloupe, including the islands of Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, Les Saintes, Marie-Galante, and La Désirade.
